Seven Tips to Keep You Toasty Warm This Winter

Home » Seven Tips to Keep You Toasty Warm This Winter

With the winter comes cold weather, which can make it tempting to blast the heater until you are comfortable and warm, day and night. The downsides to cranking up the thermostat to warm up your house include higher energy bills, energy waste and the possibility for more heating system maintenance or repair needs. This winter, why not implement a household-wide rule to try low-cost, alternative methods for staying warm?

To help get you started, here are seven tips to keep you toasty warm this winter and avoid the need for expensive furnace repair in Colorado Springs:

  • Bundle up: The easiest thing to do to stay warm is bundling up. This doesn’t mean layering up to the point where you can’t move, but you can wear thick socks, thermals under your pants and a warm sweater, and wrap up in a blanket. Bundle up and you won’t feel the urge to turn up the thermostat so high.
  • Hang curtains: Having curtains on all your windows means you can use them to keep the heat in and the cold out during the colder months. Open the curtains to let the sunlight inside, and close them when the sun starts setting. Install heavy thermal curtains so the heat cannot escape your home so easily.
  • Get area rugs for hard flooring: A lot of your home’s heat is lost through the floorboards—especially when you have hard flooring like wood and tile. To maintain the inside heat and keep your feet warm when walking around this winter, consider putting down plush area rugs or carpets.
  • Cook more often: Because cooking in your kitchen creates heat, winter is the time to use your stovetop and oven more frequently. Use a pot to heat up delicious hot beverages—the drink warms you, the stovetop warms the room. Leave the oven door open after you’ve turned it off so the warm air goes to good use—stand near it while you’re baking something, and you’ll absorb some of the radiating heat.
  • Use the fireplace: If you have a fireplace, use it so you can lower the thermostat! A fire creates warmth and a relaxing ambience. When the fire is out, make sure to close up the damper to block cold air from getting in through the chimney.
  • Seal off air leaks: A lot of warm air escapes through cracks in your home’s structure. Check around windows and exterior doorframes for cold drafts and seal them off.
  • Upgrade home insulation: If you don’t have air leaks and have made repairs, but it still feels drafty, your insulation could be the culprit. Have your home’s insulation inspected for efficiency.

Operating your heating system less often in the wintertime not only saves energy and money, it also means your heater gets a break from having to work too hard.
