plumber in Castle Rock, CO

Just about everyone has had to deal with a backed-up toilet before. As troublesome as they can be, they can usually be dealt with when you rely on a plumber. You do still need to know what to do to avoid making the problem worse, which is why we’re going to talk about how to deal with a toilet backup here today.

Get a Toilet Plunger

First of all, you need to have a toilet plunger in your home. A toilet plunger will have a rubber flap that folds out from the inside of the cup that allows the plunger to make a tighter seal around the toilet drain. Our local plumbing company advises you to try using one of these before we send someone out to fix your toilet.

If you have a clog in your toilet, simply place the plunger around the toilet drain and plunge it up and down. You should hopefully move the clog and drain the water from the bowl. You’ll need to be patient while doing this since the clog may not come loose right away. Give it at least 20 plunges before you start considering emergency plumbing services.

Avoiding Backups

Of course, the best way to fix a toilet backup and avoid having to deal with costly plumbing repairs is to prevent your toilet from backing up in the first place. What you can do is leave the toilet lid down when the fixture is not being used. This will prevent anything from falling in the bowl and being flushed down.

You should also be careful about what you flush. Anything that is not specifically designed to be flushed down a toilet should go in the trash instead. Finally, avoid harsh chemical cleaners. They may work most of the time to clean your toilet bowl, but if your toilet is hopelessly clogged and won’t drain, you’ll have a bowl full of corrosive liquid that could splash out of the bowl while you’re attending to the issue.
