Common Plumbing Myths Debunked

Home » Common Plumbing Myths Debunked

Plumbing is one of the only professions that everyone seems to think they’re an expert in. How many people do you know who act like they know everything about plumbing? Take it from an actual plumber in Colorado Springs—most people don’t know what they’re talking about! Most of the stuff that people come up with has no basis in reality. In fact, a lot of these old wives’ tales can end up damaging your plumbing. Keep reading to find out more about some of the myths we’ve heard—and how wrong those myths actually are.

  • Lemon peels help your drain: Garbage disposals and drains tend to smell pretty bad after a while. All of the different food scraps mix together and smell downright awful. One of the best “solutions” people come up with is to dump some lemon peels down the drain. The logic is that the citrusy smell will fix the odor problem. While it’s true that lemon peels will clear up that bad smell, the acid can eventually harm your plumbing in Colorado Springs. Instead of using lemon peels, put some ice down your disposal to clear up that bad odor!
  • I can put anything down my drain as long as it works: Pasta, rice, potatoes and similar foods are great to eat. But should they go down your drain when you have scraps left over after a meal? No way! Even though the drain will seem like it’s working, a plumber in Colorado Springs will tell you that those foods are actually absorbing water and will eventually clog your drain. Dump your food scraps in the trashcan instead of down the drain.
  • Flushable wipes are actually fine: We’d be lying if we said that flushable wipes aren’t a great and useful product. What’s not great, though, is that they’re advertised as being flushable. The packaging says they’re fine to flush down the toilet, but they most definitely are not! These wipes may seem like they flush just fine, but they don’t break down as advertised. Even though they seem to go down the drain without incident, they can actually cause a clog months or even years after being flushed. The only solution to a clog caused by wipes is calling a plumber to make expensive repairs. Remember, if it’s not toilet paper or human waste, it shouldn’t go in your toilet!
  • User manuals are for dummies: We’ve found that a lot of people discard user manuals because they don’t think they need that info. Well, they’re wrong about that! User manuals have a wealth of information that is really helpful in a lot of situations. You’ll be surprised at what you can learn by taking the time to browse through your user manual. You can find everything from how to do simple repairs all the way through tips to get the most out of your plumbing!
